Kitchen and bathroom cabinet refinishing is one of those projects where the before and after photos are almost hard to believe. Solid wood or MDF cabinets in good structural condition can be transformed completely — same boxes, totally different look — at a cost that's typically 70–80% less than full cabinet replacement.

Painters Lane LLC provides cabinet painting and refinishing services across Minneapolis, Edina, Hopkins, Minnetonka, and the Twin Cities metro. We've done kitchens of all sizes — from a small galley kitchen in a condo to large open kitchens with islands and floor-to-ceiling uppers. The process matters enormously with cabinets, and we take our time to do it right.

Our Cabinet Painting Process

1

Free Estimate

We come out, assess the condition of your cabinets, and give you a detailed quote. We'll let you know honestly if your cabinets are good candidates for painting.

2

Removal & Cleaning

Doors and drawers are removed and taken to our work area. Boxes are masked and all surfaces are degreased. Grease is the enemy of cabinet paint adhesion.

3

Sand & Prime

We sand for adhesion, fill any imperfections, and apply a bonding primer. This step is what makes the finish last.

4

Paint

Two coats of Sherwin-Williams cabinet enamel, allowing proper dry time between coats. We aim for a smooth, factory-like finish.

5

Reinstall & Inspect

Doors and drawers go back on, hardware is reinstalled, and we do a final inspection with you to make sure everything looks perfect.

How Much Does Cabinet Painting Cost in Minneapolis?

Typical Cabinet Refinishing Ranges

Cabinet painting cost depends primarily on the number of doors and drawer fronts, whether you want the interior of cabinets painted, and any hardware upgrades. Rough ranges for the Twin Cities:

  • Small kitchen (up to 20 doors/drawers): $1,800 – $3,000
  • Average kitchen (20–35 doors/drawers): $3,000 – $5,000
  • Large kitchen with island (35+ doors/drawers): $5,000 – $8,000+

Compare this to new cabinets (typically $15,000–$50,000 for a full kitchen) — refinishing gives you a genuinely stunning result at a fraction of the cost.

Our Workmanship Warranty

Cabinet refinishing projects are backed by our tiered workmanship warranty:

6 mo.Touch-Up Coverage
2 yr.Workmanship Warranty
5 yr.Extended Coverage

Is Cabinet Painting Worth It?

For most homeowners, yes — by a wide margin. If your cabinets are structurally solid (doors hang properly, boxes are intact, no water damage), cabinet painting makes a lot of sense. You get a completely transformed look, the ability to pick any color you want, and you keep the existing layout and storage.

We'll give you an honest assessment during the estimate. If your cabinets aren't good candidates for painting — if the wood is delaminating or heavily damaged — we'll tell you that upfront rather than take the job.

Frequently Asked Questions — Cabinet Painting

Done properly with good prep and quality paint, cabinet refinishing should last 8–15 years with normal use. Kitchens that see heavy daily use may need touch-ups sooner. Using the right products and finish (we use a hard enamel) makes a big difference in durability.
Yes, we can include cabinet interiors if you'd like. It adds to the cost but really completes the look, especially for open shelving or glass-front doors. Just let us know during the estimate.
We use a semi-gloss or satin cabinet enamel from Sherwin-Williams. These finishes are harder and more durable than standard wall paint — important for surfaces that get wiped down regularly and take more wear.
Partially. Cabinet boxes will be masked off and some areas may not be accessible during painting. We do our best to minimize disruption — most jobs can be done in 3–5 days, and you can use your sink and appliances throughout.
White and off-white are still the most popular by far — they brighten the space and are very resale-friendly. Navy and deep blue have been huge the last few years, especially for kitchen islands. Two-tone kitchens (white uppers, navy or gray lowers) are a great look too. We're happy to bring samples and talk through options.
